Raw Christmas cookies (melomakarona)

Good morning, dear friends! Christmas is so close and many of you have already started making Christmas treats. Here in Greece melomakarona are very popular. They are cookies made with oil, honey, orange juice, walnuts, flour, spices and sugar. They are baked in the oven and a honey syrup is poured over them. The truth is that they are really yummy and I am too weak to eat only one! So I thought to make a healthy version that would not make my belly bigger and my scales complain! The inspiration I needed came from my coconut truffles. Dates are the main ingredient and they consist the «body» and also work as a sweetener. Combined with oats, walnuts, orange zest, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove powder they make a great raw version of melomakarona! I tried to bake them but I prefer them raw. You can dip/drizzle them in melted chocolate. When my hubby tried them, he was amazed! «These are melomakarona!» he said! I was really happy with his reaction! They are filling and you don’t have to eat many even if you have a sweet tooth like me!

Ingredients (yields 13):
1 cup dates, pitted
1 1/2 cup (130 gr.) oat flakes Bauckhof
1 1/4 cup (125 gr.) walnuts
2 Tbsp orange juice, some zest
2 tsp ceylon cinnamon powder Cook
1 tsp clove powder
1/2 tsp nutmeg
50 gr. vegan chocolate Vivani

Soak dates in water for 1 hour. Pulse walnuts and oats until powdered. Add spices and zest. Put the drained dates into the blender and pulse until you get a paste. Add orange juice. Then add the oat mixture and pulse until well combined. Shape dough into 13 melomakarona cookies. Melt chocolate and drizzle it over the melomakarona. Top with finely ground walnuts.  Keep them in an airtight container in the fridge. Enjoy!
